Changes to Graduate Visas: Australia 2024, effective July 1, 2024
The Australian government has proposed significant changes to temporary graduate visa programs as part of its recent Migration Strategy. These changes, scheduled to come into effect on July 1, 2024, are subject to approval of legislative amendments. Here is an organized summary of the changes that will happen:
Postvocational Education Work Stream:
- It will be renamed as the Postvocational Education Work Stream.
- The maximum eligible age will be reduced to 35 years of age or younger, except for British and Hong Kong national passport holders, who may be under 50 years of age.
- An associate degree, diploma or trade qualification related to the occupation nominated on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) is required.
- Holders of bachelor’s degrees or higher will no longer be eligible for this stream and must apply through the post-secondary education work stream.
- The length of stay can be up to 18 months, extending to 5 years for overseas British or Hong Kong national passport holders.
Post-Higher Education Work Stream:
- The name will be changed to Post-Higher Education Work Stream.
- The maximum eligible age will be reduced to 35 years or less, although British and Hong Kong national passport holders will be allowed to be up to 50 years old.
- The 2-year extension for ‘select degree’ will be eliminated.
- Periods of stay vary according to the level of study, from up to 2 years for bachelor’s degrees to 3 years for master’s (research) and doctoral (PhD) degrees, extending to 5 years for British or Hong Kong national passport holders abroad.
– Special periods of stay are maintained for Indian nationals as agreed in the India-Australia Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement (IA-ECTA).
Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream:
- To be renamed as Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream.
- No other changes to this stream have been announced.
