Sponsor Visa: A Pathway to Permanency in Australia
If you’re in Australia on a temporary visa, such as a student visa or a Work and Holiday visa, the Sponsor Visa can be an excellent option to stay in the country in the medium to long term. This visa allows you to work in Australia sponsored by an employer for 2 to 4 years, depending on the type of visa.
Types of Sponsor Visas in Australia
There are several categories of employer-sponsored visas in Australia:
- Temporary Skill Shortage visa (Subclass 482): Allows employers to bring skilled workers when they cannot find a suitably qualified Australian. It includes three subtypes:
- Short Term Stream: Up to 2 years, or 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies.
- Medium Term Stream: Up to 4 years.
- Labour Agreement Stream: For skilled workers nominated by employers with a labor agreement.
- Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186): A permanent visa that allows you to stay in Australia long-term.
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (Subclass 494): A provisional regional visa.
Requirements for the Sponsor Visa
To be eligible for a Sponsor Visa, your occupation must be on the sponsored occupations list. You must also demonstrate a minimum level of English through official certifications such as IELTS, OET, TOEFL, PTE, or Cambridge C1. The company sponsoring you must justify to the Australian government that your skills are in high demand and that they cannot find an Australian for the position.
